Three Questions to Bring to Your Next Appointment
2 min read
Three questions to bring to your next medical appointment — and why they change everything.
Most people leave appointments with unresolved questions they didn't know how to ask.
Not because they aren't intelligent. Because nobody taught them that they could.
The three questions
Here are three that will serve you in almost any medical encounter:
"Can you help me understand why?"
Not a challenge. A genuine request for information you're entitled to have. Why this medication and not another. Why this timeline. Why this approach. A provider who can answer this clearly is a provider who has thought it through. One who can't — or won't — is telling you something important.
"What happens if I choose not to do this right now?"
This question does not mean you're refusing care. It means you're making an informed decision rather than a pressured one. You are allowed to understand your options before you commit to one of them. Always.
"Is there anything else this could be?"
This is the question that changes diagnoses. It opens the differential back up. It gives a provider permission to think out loud with you instead of delivering a verdict. The best ones will welcome it.
You do not need a medical background to ask these questions.
You need to know that you are allowed to.
Write them down before your next appointment if it helps. Bring someone with you if you can. And if a provider makes you feel that asking them is a problem — that is information too.
